Textbook: Calculus, by Salas, Hille, and Etgen. (8th Edition)

If you would like to look at another book, a nice reference for most of the material in this course is available (free!) on-line. It's Multivariable Calculus, by George Cain and James Herod.

Other information: This is, of course, the initial offering of this course, by me or anyone else. The material covered is roughly what was in the old Math 1509 and Math 2507 of quarter days. If you care, you can see how I've taught those courses by looking in the archives.

Quizzes: There will be seven one hour quizzes. These will be

September 7 September 21October 5
October 21November 2 November 16
November 30

The final examination is scheduled by the Office of the Registrar.

You will be allowed to use any books, notes, tables, or calculators you wish on the quizzes and the final examination.

Homework: You can find the homework assignments here. These are not to be handed in, but it is most important that you have a go at them--they will form the basis of the recitation discussions.

You can see my solution for the fourth homework to be handed in.

Grades: Your course grade will be determined from the following information:

Hour quizzes, 7 @400 2800
Homework300
Final Examination900
total 4000

Quiz solutions: Here are solutions for the quizzes:

Quiz One - September 7 Quiz Two - September 21 Quiz Three - October 5
Quiz Four - October 21 Quiz Five - November 2 Quiz Six - November 16
Quiz 7 - November 30

Notes: For your reading pleasure, I have prepared class notes for the material on Taylor's theorem in higher dimensions. They include some exercises for you to have a go at. [I have made some corrections to the notes originally posted; you may want to take a look at the new edition.]. You can also see Professor Carlen's notes on this same material.

For a discussion of the material about finding areas and moments of polygonal regions using Green's Theorem, you can look at Section 17.3 of the famous Herod-Cain textbook Multivariable Calculus.

Final Examinations: The Office of the Registrar has published the schedule of final examinations for this semester.

The moving finger writes; and having writ
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.

I wish you all a happy holiday!
