Words of Wisdom
for
My Students

Your grade in my class will be based almost entirely on written work, so it is very important that you communicate clearly in writing. Any work that you submit calls for an explanation of what you have done, using complete, correct English sentences (Symbols abbreviate words or phrases and may be used as parts of sentences.). I shall read exactly what you have written and will make no attempt to deduce what you "really" mean or to supply missing steps or logical connectives. Any symbols you introduce that are not standard must also be explained or quantified. Your explanations need not be lengthy to be clear.

I hear some people apologize for their inability to express themselves, and pretend to have their heads full of good things which they cannot bring out through lack of eloquence. This is a delusion. These are shadows cast upon their minds by some half-shaped ideas which they cannot disentangle and clear up inwardly, and therefore are unable to express outwardly; they do not understand themselves.
